Types of Cloud : Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud

Types of Cloud is an easy to understand article on Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud with brief description of each types divided in this way. In the previous article – Cloud Computing Service Models and Deployment, which is basically another approach to classify the types of Cloud, we just touched the topic on Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud without going in to much details.

Types of Cloud : Introduction

As basically our intention is not to confuse a common or average user with various difficult terminologies in the name describing the types of cloud, we have deliberately omitted some certain terminologies to make te article easy to understand by any level of readers. The technology behind is definitely very difficult, we do have in depth guides, tutorials on them on this website, but possible referencing them might confuse an already confused new user. Although there is lot of talk of cloud in reference to the end user with a set of goals – to increase the flexibility and free resources, paying only for what you use; cloud architectures are not all equal and there are currently three different types of cloud which can be identified with models  – that is our matter to discuss today – Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud.

Types of Cloud : Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Hybrid Cloud

Unless otherwise mentioned, you are always using a type of Public Cloud – be it SaaS, PaaS or IaaS. The purchase of a traditional IT solution has an impact on the company on expense while deciding for a cloud solution,it  implies that the cost impacts on operating expenses, considering the manner of usage and then the cost is consumption. This, however, needs to pay particular attention to the type of cloud to choose from which may depend on goal of the company.

Public Cloud Computing

A public cloud is based on the standard model of cloud computing, a service provider makes available the Internet resources to the public, such as applications and storage. The public cloud services can be provided on a model for what you use and pay for, this model also provides scalability and high performance at a very competitive price, as companies have the opportunity to have a data center, virtually the owner, without having to buy and maintain hardware inside them.

The costs are associated with maintenance activities, training of personnel for the management of physical networks, the costs are associated with software licenses, the costs are for the management of space and personnel spaces. The public cloud is by its nature very flexible and this strength makes it an attractive solution for companies of all sizes.

While the flexibility, scalability and cost reduction is an advantage of the public cloud, the other impossible to have a control over the choices are especially the security, which nourish the fear of end of how their data is stored and how safe they are from external attacks.  There are separate article on these security issues, if you are interested you can search within this website.

Types of Cloud

Private Cloud Computing

The private cloud computing is an environment within the company itself, created with virtualization of resources, services and standard management. In this model, companies build a cloud computing environment that is completely within the data center and that allows the user to keep the data in its operational structure, solving the question of the issue of privacy and security that we have seen as a negative point behind the public cloud.

The private cloud has emerged after a very slow start, because it had to earn the attention of companies to make them understand that the possibility of using a system of simplified provisioning, allowing users to serve the individual business units according to their real needs is an added value. The main advantage of this model is precisely the ability to optimize the available resource. In contrast to the public cloud, the main reasons that drive a company to the choice of this model of private cloud are security, governance and data privacy and the need (present mainly in large companies) to not leave any unused hardware resources and software for which has significant investments.

Turning to the technical side, we can say that private cloud computing is managed with the same tools that we already know : OpenStack , VMware and its comprehensive suite of services and other products that usually allow first to unify the virtualized resources and then how to manage a cloud environment, and with features similar to the public cloud but within the enterprise data center. We published Video and text guides on Private Cloud for the advanced users.

Hybrid Cloud Computing

Besides the two models of public and private cloud the third is defined “hybrid” which is in the middle trying to take advantage of each model them where the others are weak. The infrastructure is maintained jointly by the internal and external providers, and implement systems that allows to share the resources and data between the data center and that of the public cloud. One of the risks bigger than in choosing a cloud of hybrid type is the lack of operational consistency. Means that systems companies usually have a common platform of management, at the same time the cloud resources could instead be handled by different systems and interfaces.
