When to create a subdomain or a new domain for your website

There are several ways to add a blog to one site. On a new domain, a subdomain or a directory site. Yet all these methods are not equal. We must make a choice among these possibilities.

What are the different methods?

As we have seen, there are 3 main ways to add a blog in addition to its corporate website:When to create a subdomain
On another subject: www . example . com
On a subdomain: www . blog . example . com
In a directory: www. example . com / blog

Search engines do not consider the same way each of these three methods. Knowing that they use indicators such as the authority of the area, the number of incoming links, etc.. We quickly understood that an analysis is necessary when setting up a blog.

Indeed, recall a few principles:

A page has the authority to the subdomain or domain on which it is stored. In fact, the creation of a new site for the blog may be long in terms of SEO because all the work is to be remade for the blog.

Sub-areas are not necessarily all the authority of the primary domain. In fact, there is a risk that, through a sub-domain, the blog is not very visible in search results.

Some sub-areas receive no (or very little) benefit from the main domain. Hosting solutions from free blogs are typical examples: WordPress, Typepad, Blogger… (fortunately too )

While a good strategy for linking the various sub-domains can overcome these limitations, one must keep in mind that all the stuff is not transmitted.

The advantage of directories is that they enjoy the authority of the primary domain. In fact, part of SEO work is already done, namely the number of links to the area, the variety of links to the area, etc..

However using a subdomain or a new domain for a blog can be useful in different situations.

When to use a subdomain?

If you try to monopolize the search results on a particular query, using a subdomain can be interesting. In fact, Google only displays a number of results per site, so it is a way to be more present.

If there is consistency between your blog and your site. In fact, if you decided that your company’s blog will only contain items related to your business, it is preferable to keep it on a subdomain, this will only increase the authority of your domain.

When to use a new domain?

If you are planning to have a very large editorial on your blog, you should probably use a new domain. This will give you more freedom: you will not need to limit yourself to your business communication but will instead deal with the news of your industry, etc..

It is also a way to develop your new site linking as it will increase the number of links to your corporate site from different domains.
