PaaS offerings are significantly matured in this year. Some of these platforms are already suitable for use in an enterprise. We wrote about Platform as a Service (PaaS) in details before and also we explained Platform as a Service (PaaS) over a video.
If you check the List of PaaS Providers, you will notice that; most has a free tier of usage and actually PaaS definitely helps the new developers – indeed, PaaS For Developers was a different topic itself. PaaS offerings are significantly matured in 2014 – indeed, we supported both Heroku and OpenShift by publishing various guides to run their blogging software and various other tools – for free. But, PaaS lacked the maturity. But now; some of these platforms are suitable for use in an enterprise for professional software development.

Over five years, the term Platform as a Service (PaaS) had a strong impact throughout the IT world. Since these platforms are in use in other industries such as the automotive industry, with significantly positive attributes – standardization, revenue growth, modularization, etc. – the terms has also been widely incorporated in the IT industry – Gears, Wheels derived from the automotive industry.
It feels now that, almost as if every software add-on now is a separate platform. Of course, this is not so. Nevertheless, many PaaS offerings in this year has been matured into real platforms. On these PaaS platforms, not just software development processes can be much more efficient, but also Big Data Analytics can run.

Many of the currently available PaaS platforms offer much more functionality and management features than even a few years ago when PaaS was only for the developers of web applications. Today, through PaaS platforms not only development environments, databases and runtime environments can be realized, but also a variety of features for collaborative development to operation of the applications can be deployed.
The availability of most platforms is good to very good. The standardization are gradually increasing, although the portability of applications across different PaaS platforms (Cross-Platform Portability) still leaves something to be desired. Especially for large companies who digitize their business processes and customer relationships, PaaS platforms offer tremendous advantages. New development methods can be debugged without large investments and new applications, such as for marketing and sales, with a short time-to-market, develop and test.

Video Explaining PaaS :

PaaS Offerings in 2014 - Now Steady for Enterprise IT

One of the most important innovations for CIOs might be the fact that PaaS no longer comes only as a service from the public cloud, but that the technology stack is now ready for the internal operation or in a “Hosted PaaS model”. OpenShift, for example offering such as a readymade package. The situation is similar with the new PaaS offering from Microsoft. Not to forget Cloud Foundry. It forms the basis for IBM Bluemix, the enterprise PaaS offering from IBM. The new operating models make it possible for the first time to use PaaS in to company-specific conditions – a good chance to accelerate its own development and innovation processes.

PaaS is the Basis for Analytics and Mobile Workloads

Development, testing and operation of web applications is still an important use of PaaS. In the last 18 months, however, two different usage models have come to the fore – Big Data Analytics and Mobile Applications. Many PaaS platforms today offer pre-configured and highly scalable analytics systems, for example; based on Hadoop or SAP HANA. This relieves many users. It does not need additional skills to administer and monitor a complex analytics infrastructure.

Also for the development of mobile applications PaaS platforms are perfectly suitable. Nowhere, the conditions are changing (operating system, device types, browser generations, etc.) faster for the mobile devices. Here, the PaaS platforms are unified, which in turn is controlled by the Provider.

PaaS and IaaS Are Growing Together

Companies or the individuals developing a new application, raises the question of the operation and the ability to scale. Here have some PaaS solutions gives the opportunity to move and operate the applications developed on the PaaS platform to IaaS. It was thought that PaaS and IaaS will go through a rivalry, which turned out to be synergistic. On the other hand, Rackspace Deployment like “Blueprint”, which is essentially IaaS, is adapting the easy to “switch on and off” model of PaaS for Application deployment.
