How Does a VPN Work

The network to which a VPN binds its subscribers is sometimes also called an assigned network. The assigned network can lead to a physical network into which external devices are included with the help of a VPN via a special (VPN) gateway. The VPN partners thus become part of the assigned network and can now be addressed directly from there – practically as if they were in the middle of it. Because of this illusion, VPN partners are referred to as a virtual networks.

The gateway can also point to a purely virtual network, which consists only of other VPN partners (“end-to-end” VPN).

In addition, it is possible to connect two compatible networks adjacent to the same adjacent network (“site-to-site” VPN), whereby the adjacent network in between can also be of a completely different kind.
The mutually accessible networks together form the hardware (the devices themselves, plus cables) and software, which in turn is needed by the devices to “tell” them what to do in the first place.

To bind a subscriber from his original network to a network-accessible from there, VPN software is required. In the classic configuration, it is installed on the one hand on the device that connects the networks and on the other hand brought to the subscriber to be integrated. VPN works without having to lay an extra cable or add anything else to hardware. Conceptually, VPN is, therefore, a pure software product.

Installing a VPN is simple. If you wanted to begin with VPN, but still have no idea of what and how to begin, we got you covered.

Choose to Reliable VPN Provider

For beginners, we strongly recommend SurfShark and NORDVPN. Many people have tested these providers and reported that they are beginner-friendly and easy to grasp. In addition, these two VPNs can protect multiple devices with a single subscription and provide a 30-day money-back guarantee. In this way, you can try it for a month without sticking to a long-term subscription. Many free VPNs are uncertain and deal with data and speed limitations.

After selecting the VPN service, you need to subscribe to the provider.
Create an account and have login information needed for the following procedure. As we mentioned before, both SurfShark and NordVPN have money-back warranty options, so always try them and get a refund if you are not satisfied with the services.

Begin by downloading the VPN app after signing up with your favourite VPN provider; all you have to do is download that provider’s VPN app to your computer. Just visit your VPN provider’s website and you will end up with the software you need. Avoid downloading software from other sources as it may contain any sort of virus in it. After successfully downloading and installing the software, you can now log in.

Activate the Virtual Private Network application and now get to use the Internet without danger and any worries just Press the connection button to establish a VPN connection and enable VPN. In general, since the software is running in the device’s background, it does not even know that it is enabled.

And it is there! While VPN is active, you can view web security, personally and free.

Creating a VPN Account

  1. Click the Start tab. Type VPN in the search bar and select Set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.
  2. Add the IP address of the server that you wish to connect to. In case of connecting it to your work network, your IT team will suggest you the address.
  3. If you would like to just install and have the connection and prefer to use it later, just click on Don’t connect now.
  4. Now you can proceed with your username and password. You will be asked again for the actual connection, then proceed with the connecting tab.
  5. To get connected, click the Logo of the Windows which appears on your screen. Next, select Connect under “VPN connection”.
  6. Now proceed with the corresponding domain and credentials to connect.
  7. Click on the Security tab and choose the particular VPN Type from the drop-down bar. It’s a bit of a hassle, but positioning a VPN using the Windows integrated software is comparatively quick and accommodating for the user.

If you have issues connecting then it might be attributed to the server configuration there are many types of VPN so contact your network administrator to find out which one is being used then proceed with clicking properties.

Is using VPN safe and secure?

You may be wondering how reliable it is with a VPN provider. Internet traffic is diverted through the VPN provider’s server. Your provider can keep track of your activities, of what you are doing etc. so it is very important to have utmost trust with your provider. In most cases, VPN providers do not indulge in their customers’ privacy or keep storing their data. But very few like to offer free services to their customers and take their data for advertising purposes; these are often very dangerous, so before choosing a VPN provider there must be a thorough check.
