It is possible to set the amount of RAM Windows 7 will use. In this tutorial, we will show you how you can set a specific amount of RAM for usage for Windows 7 itself so that the physical memory can be used by other applications in better way.
Click Start, type “msconfig” (without the quotation marks) and hit Enter from keyboard:

Windows 7 System Configuration window will open, under the Boot tab in System Configuration, click on the Advanced options button:

By default, Windows 7 can use all the available RAM, just check the box saying ” Maximum memory ” and set the amount you want. Do not set anything below 700 mb (you can test though), it will make Windows 7 very unstable :

Click OK button. Then Apply and OK in the System Configuration Window. A security prompt will alert you that you are going to change some settings under boot menu. Accept it. Then Windows 7 will ask you to restart to make the changes. Close all applications and click the restart button.
After restart, you can see the change from Windows task manager’s (CTRL + Shift + Escape) Performance tab.
