What is firmware?
When you use a DVD player or any hardware, it is guided by software that can be compared to a driver for a component in your computer. This software is called firmware. It can manage the device on which it is installed.
That will contain the necessary codecs to play, DivX video for example.
Like any software, it needs to be updated. That is why it is on a ROM that can easily be changed: it is on flash memory.
If a DVD player that have problems when playing a video, perform an update that can fix it. To do this, simply go to the manufacturer’s site of your equipment and select the model inorder to find the latest firmware.
In the case of a DVD player, it will burn the program on a CD, insert it and then restart to upgrade: these happens automatically. The approach is often given by the manufacturer.
