Windows Mail was an integral part of Windows Vista but it is not present in Windows 7. In this tutorial, we will show unique and easy way to get Windows Mail back in Windows 7 with SP1.
We got problem with Windows Live Mail few days ago; so thought make the way easy to get back Windows Mail. We will use radically simple method to get Windows Mail back.
The method is valid for Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit with SP1. Please do not redistribute the files. The password for the rar file is thecustomizewindows.com. Download the rar file by clicking here.
In Windows 7 C:Program Files folder, there is indeed a Windows Mail folder that contains a msoe.dll file. Some one (of Microsoft) has changed that dll file to a non functional dll; so we need to replace that msoe.dll file first. You will get the 32 bit and 64 bit version of original Windows Vista. Use the proper version.
---
For 32 bit of Windows 7 (with SP1)
Copy the proper version of msoe.dll from our rar file after extracting it and paste to C:Program FilesWindows Mail; it will ask whether to replace the existing same named dll; accept it.
For 64 bit of Windows 7 (with SP1)
Copy the proper version of msoe.dll from our rar file after extracting it and paste to C:Program FilesWindows Mail; it will ask whether to replace the existing same named dll; accept it.
There is same named folder Windows Mail in Program Files (x86) that contains msoe.dll too. But that is a non functional folder; you do not need to do anything with that.

You need to change the ownership first,, it is a non-registered file in Windows Registry, so its owner is not you but Microsoft. Right click on the msoe.dll and click the Security tab then click Advanced button:

Then, (read carefully) first click on the owner Tab in the window that pops up after clicking Advanced button. Establish yourself as owner by clicking Edit:

Click OK and then Go back to that dll file’s Properties window and tick all the fields to allow yourself:

Click OK. Understand the above step. People often write in round about way.
You can move to replace by dragging too:

It will ask you to replace just approve it. Done.
Some people love to scratch the ear with opposite hand moving the hand from back of the head. In one word in a round about way. You can replace any system files in this way like that using the same sided hand to scratch your opposite ear moving from front of your face. This is your choice though; your ears and hands, after all.
Create a desktop shortcut now
Where is WinMail.exe? Funny, Microsoft has hidden it. Press f10 button from keyboard and click Tools and then Folder options:

In the Folder options window, click View tab, then check “Show hidden folders and drives” and uncheck “Hide protected files of the operating system (recommended).” :

Click OK. WinMail.exe will appear now. Right click over it an create a desktop shortcut:

Done. Double click the desktop shortcut and Windows Mail will run:

Now you got the Windows Mail back without using any registry hack, any installer file.

Thanks so much for this. Been going nuts trying to get windows live mail to work the way I wanted on my new computer, was just about to reformat and go back to vista.
Your suggested procedure for bringing back to life Windows Mail in Win 7 SP1, worked perfectly, thank you very much. I have been unsuccessful so far in importing my Messages, and Accounts details (Contacts were not a problem) from Win Live Mail. Would you be able to advise on the best way to do that ? Thanks, and Happy New Year !
Hi, I followed steps, clicked WinMail.exe shortcut – Winmail started to run, then ERROR box pops up saying:
(0x8007000E)
The only option is to click OK – and it then shuts down mail prog before it fully loads
Any suggestions – I really want WinMail back!
THANK YOU!
PS – I tried copying dll to both x86 & reg Programs folder (I have 64bit win7)
IT WORKS!!! I restarted computer & it works now – THANK YOU!!!
Dear sir
How are you?
thanks for your post,
I really dislike the Windows live, especially with multiple accounts.
I really appreciate your help with the install, It works great. Thought it would be a nightmare, and wasn’t sure it would stop Live mail working, But both work, so I was able to copy all me messages over. Piece of cake.
Also great for including the download file. So often people forget the little things.
Cheers
Great site.
