Backlink greed is a dangerous disease. As There is no cure for Backlink Greediness, Google tried many times to alert you no to get greedy for getting backlinks.
Backlink Greed : Commenting in Dofollow comments blogs
Many peoples are nowadays saying that use dofollow on your blog and to give others Backlink through comments. If you can examine, they actually might not using no-follow but they have Disallowed crawler access to the comments.
In the above condition, you will get a backlink immediately; that backlink will merely stay for 2-3 days. The result can be dangerous : Google will find the backlink, count it; then suddenly it will disappear as the rules in robots.txt is set to Disallow comments.

Link from comments even if not roboted, has little value.
Think about the blogs who has thousands of such crème de la crème Backlinks. Will anyone will give you a chance to let the Google Crawler going away from their blog through a blog comment? Everyone will try to get Google Crawler stay on his / her own domain.
Any link, be it a comment Backlink or any other way, is the shortest way for the Google Crawler to reach another site.
Previously we wrote, why you should be careful about comments, you might be interested to read that as well.
Backlink Greed : Link Exchange
If you notice the most successful blogs, almost all has very little or no “Friend-links”. There are many reasons behind it:
- To prevent Google crawler going away through the link, hence it is a part of on site optimization.
- Reciprocal Backlink has very little value to Google, in fact if the number is huge and of unrelated sites, Google
might penalize the blog.
- Free link exchanges are well known mischiefs
Then how to get backlinks?
If the blog has substantial and good content with nice SEO workup, Google will definitely put it on the top of Search Results. We are saying from our own experience : when we had only 4 backlinks, Google placed us nicely. Then other good bloggers begin to mention us through their blogs and various websites (just like we do it).
Suggestion for commenting
Try not to get greedy to get a backlink and post comments in sites those are unrelated, has poor content, blog already got DMCA Take Down Notices, Penalized by Google etc. Backlink from them is not going to help your site by any means.
Is there any Backlink in comments which Google counts?
Probably Google counts the comment backlink only under certain conditions. For example, we wrote an article about Socialize Plugin, John (Plugin developer) came after getting the pingback came to what it is about. He wrote a thankful comment. As the Backink in comment is very relevant, Google might count it.
The number of backlinks shown in Google Webmaster Tools might not be the real number Google actually counts. For example, if we comment in a blog with my Name and URL which has been penalized by Google, WMT will show plus one backlink from that domain, but might actually treat it negatively.
