A Brief Article on Cloud Based SMS vs Push Notifications for IoT Will Help the Developers to Choose Between Two Options With Maximum Delivery Rate. Obviously, we can use a GSM module with 1-2 IoT setup. But when the number of devices increases, Wi-Fi becomes the obvious choice for connectivity. Furthermore, the GSM module will demand a SIM card and SIM card commonly have some payments to send SMS every day. It will appear as if the GSM module is an easy solution to notify the user at a remote place but factually Wi-Fi requires the least investment.

Now, our option becoming two: cloud based SMS vs push notifications.

Cloud Based SMS vs Push Notifications for IoT

Push notifications work by sending a message to the inbox or displaying on the main screen of a consumer’s smartphone. Push notifications relatively new technology. Push message demands developing an Android app and too many software configurations works. Push is great for product websites, blogs. Push notifications are less intrusive since messages can be delivered without interrupting the user in their current activity. At worst push message may fail more than SMS. However unlike SMS, push is not regulated by the govt, so there are far fewer limitations for the businesses. Push is not restricted when it comes to character length or formatting, whereas SMS is capped at 160 characters, including spaces. So in our use-case of IoT applications, cloud based SMS best option over push notification. You will realize it soon whenever you think of wide variety of devices at your home – Android, iOS, ordinary phone.

What Cloud Based SMS Options We Have?

There are several services including Twilio. Twilio is of the company which currently owns SendGrid. In older articles, we have shown the easiness of using SendGrid (SendGrid was not acquired by Twilio at that time). Twilio is just easy to use and send SMS via API even with cURL. There are other services like WIA.

While choosing a cloud SMS provider for IoT, you must check whether they have minimum guides around Arduino, ESP boards.
