You have 5 fingers. We need to make you remember 5 things to for better photography with DSLR. We know that you can read many of our articles published on this website, specially for working on manual mode. We know that you can forget the newly learned theories and tips.

Bare Minimum Things to Remember Before Shutter Press

Rule of thumb : This finger is for checking the light. There must be enough light to avoid noise. If light is lesser, you need a lens with enough bigger aperture. This is not what always happen with us for different reasons. If your present lens has variable aperture which changes focal length, then use the lowest zoom to get the largest aperture, when the situation is dark. You can later crop the image in Adobe Photoshop. You can almost never remove noise in photo. You can try reflectors in outdoors or even indoor during the day. Do not zoom too much. Also, Color Balance Mode can drastically change the feel of light.

Rule of index finger: This is rule maintaining finger. You must carry your smartphone to use some of the mobile applications we mentioned in our earlier article. The index finger rule will help you to get idea of technical matters, which includes background blur. All of us know that a clean background often better than a busy background, although that is not any rule.

Rule of middle finger: Do not show middle finger yourself! Worst mistake in composition is getting a part chopped off in a frame. Rule of thirds is not always necessary to strictly follow. It is the golden section which matters more and we can not clearly judge through a viewfinder. Not maintaining the rule of third can show you middle finger in video shoots. For still photography, you can take 2-3 shots including one strictly maintaining the rule of thirds.

Rule of ring finger: Ring finger is for maintaining the beauty. Focus must be perfect at any expense. Pressing the shutter itself slightly disturb the composition in the hands of the beginners. The movement (or sometimes at worse, it is shake) mainly depends on two factors – holding the camera properly and style of pressing the shutter. The only way to learn the style of pressing the shutter is pressing the shutter to get used. Modern cameras often lack the mechanical feel of the shutter of film cameras. Our mind tries to find the end of the shutter which results over-pressing. Tripod with shutter release make photography easy. You need a shutter speed more than 1/250 in less used hand to get sharp focus.

Rule of little finger: Little finger is understanding from viewfinder how it will look on larger high-resolution screen. Photographs often become of pissing quality because of lack of external high resolution monitor. It is quite difficult to judge photograph in a small low resolution screen. It is not always possible to carry a 43″ 4K screen for photography but your smartphone probably can be used as larger monitor.

Conclusion

Making a list of 50 points not enough for perfect photography. Often we forget quite common things, we pointed some of those in this guide. If you do not feel your some photograph could be better, you can not learn new things. Mistake in photography is common. Learning from the mistakes make perfect.
