Developers have to write an enormous amount of codes every day. As the company and its team of developers grow, the amount of code also increases. All this code needs to be maintained better for the project to run smoothly.
Therefore, there should be a standard for every project. This kind of standardization helps the developer manage a commit message easily and maintain the feature development.

This is where git hooks come in. It is a very useful feature of git that can make your coding work easy.

What Are Git Hooks?

Git hooks are custom scripts that can run before or after a git command. You can use it to trigger customized automated action in your software development lifecycle. Therefore, every time a certain event occurs, the git hook will detect and start an automated function.
There are two types of git hook – client-side hooks and server-side hooks. Client-side hooks are useful for pre-commit, pre-rebase, post-merge, and post-checkout. Server-side hooks include pre-receive, post-receive, and more.

Why Use Git Hook?

The biggest advantage of using git hooks is workflow automation. You can use a git hook to scan for a particular pre-commit message you used. The hook will stop the commit from operating. However, if you want to use the commit message, you can simply skip or override it. It is quite easy to do, which makes them extremely convenient for developers.
When you add a hook to your client-side server, it will not impose any policy on the entire organization. Once a change is pushed, the server-side can check them for errors. If the conditions do not match, it can send an error message back to the client. This is a great way to integrate any development policy and perform notification.
Thus, the developer does not have to find commit messages manually and make necessary changes. You can use a git hook to check errors in commits before they are pushed and maintain the required project standard. You can also use it to inform your teammates about any changes in the source code.
Another advantage of git hooks is that you can write it in any coding language. This particular feature of git hooks will make developers more efficient in their work.
However, the most important use of git hooks is secret detection. Tech companies usually store their data on git, which includes sensitive information as well. Therefore, data security has to be the key focus for developers. Git hooks allow developers to easily detect the vulnerable secrets in the source code that you can alter.
The best way to use git hooks for data security is to implement a software tool. Software that focuses on automating threat detection will help you to strengthen the data security of your company with ease and efficiency.
