Domain Name System (DNS) and Name Server (NS) is quite complicated and less understood topics to the most. Here are just some must to know points on DNS, NS.

 

What is Domain Name System (DNS) ?

 

Domain Name System (DNS) is a kind of naming system for servers connected to the Internet. Domain Name System (DNS) associates various information with unique domain names to participating entities. It translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical identifiers.

 

Example of Domain Name System (DNS)

 

198.87.108.107 is an IP. It is really impossible to remember. Here is where Domain Name System (DNS) makes the work simple. Domain Name System (DNS) distributes the responsibility of assigning the domain names, in above example we have shown an IP address for a website. Now, how easy it is to remember example.com instead of  198.87.108.107.

If there is Domain Name System (DNS) then what is the role of Name Server (NS) ?

 

It is complicated topic. In order to keep the system easy, take one kind of server, known as caching name server which stores DNS query results for a period of time determined in the configuration time-to-live or TTL of the domain name record in question.

So, all these Domain Name System, Name Server basically points a types domain name in browser (in our case example.com) to that I.P.  198.87.108.107.

 

Is this so easy?

 

Never, Domain Name System is a complicated topic. One I.P. or one Name Server can be pointed to hundreds of Domain Names. You never pointed to example-1.com using the same Name Server and I.P. that of example.com because of few complicated things. One of such thing is BIND. There are several Domain Name System management softwares which handles this complicated process.

Example of Name servers : ns1 . example . com  ; ns2 . example . com

 

How to find out Domain Name System (DNS) and Name Server (NS) for a Domain Name ?

 

There are several online free tools to find out which Domain Name System, Name Servers a website is using.

 

This is very very less information about Domain Name System and Name Server. There are books of several thousand pages only on Domain Name System. Domain Name System has faced many criticism as there are various legal and authoritative issues related with Domain Name System and Domain Name Server.
