Streaming Video and Audio from Server using VLC Player Video Guide shows how to configure Rackspace Cloud Server with VLC Player to stream your Audio or Video. In previous guide named Streaming Video From Rackspace Cloud Server Using VLC Player, we wrote the principles behind streaming Video and Audio from Server using VLC Player. However, some visitors and followers on Google Plus requested for a Video Guide to make it more clear. Here is the whole process from the starting to clear the whole thing behind How to Setup a Streaming Video and Audio from Server using VLC Player using Rackspace Cloud Server. There are some parts which will be shown here in details (like options to setup VLC streaming on HTML webpage, embedding etc.).

Streaming Video and Audio from Server using VLC Player : Basics

Basically we will follow three steps, splitting in to four :

  1. Configuring a Rackspace Cloud Server for VNC in the way we have shown before. This setup is the most important part and you can get the required commands to setup Ubuntu as VNC here and a full screen cast of the same here.
  2. Now you need to access that Rackspace Cloud Server with GUI now with any client software. We mentioned the ways before in another guide.
  3. Installing VLC Player on that Remote Ubuntu (shown on video, practically very easy).
  4. Last is fully about VLC Player itself – make it clear that the basic way is same like if you stream from your computer (we have shown on the video with Mac) whatever the Operating System is or Linux Server. This points will be discussed in more detail here. Otherwise this article has nothing to offer.

Streaming Video and Audio from Server using VLC Player : The Configuration of VLC player to Stream

Watch the video to full opening the YouTube page and making it full screen on HD. In the last part we have shown an overview for settings of VLC Player on Mac – that is just for the reason, if we show on the Ubuntu VLC player, it will look slower and small sized in video plus we had to upload video, music etc. on the server. That is why we have not shown in details that last step. Do not do the same like us. You have to configure VLC Player on that Ubuntu VNC that means Rackspace Cloud Server not your local computer. You can practice it, obviously.

We installed Apache2 in the video. You can use HTML webpage on that server to embed your video or Music. Video or Music are to be kept on /var/www/ folder so that they are accessible with IP address. In other words, you can basically upload the videos, music using any FTP software later even without giving root access.

The HTML code to embed VLC Media Player can be found here (it is breaking WordPress post page) :

Obviously you have change the IP and port number. Port number depends on VLC Player’s setup (we are showing, wait) and 8000 is good. Do not use 1234 like absurd port number. You have to forward the port in that case.
And if you do not want to embed music or video, instead ask users to use VLC player on their computer, you can basically follow this way : Playing Youtube Video on VLC Player. It is an important link because you can see the open to play media files screenshot there. To stream, you have to tick that Streaming check box and click the settings button beside it (inactive in that screenshot). We are talking about your Ubuntu remote computer that you have set on Rackspace Cloud Server.

Clicking that settings button will bring up this kind of settings page :
