Eye in Portrait Photography : The Look and Expression

Eye in Portrait Photography is an important part for realistic feel. The Look and Expression are important components in composition of Portrait photography. It is difficult to hide our expression of eyes unless one is a professional model or actor/actress. Eye in Portrait Photography is an important aspect which actually determines the value of the art work.

Eye in Portrait Photography and Vacant Look

From the technical point of view there is not much to say, we use our DSLR camera, without which this kind of finer work could not be created. A focal length equivalent to 28mm allows us to approach the subject without going overboard with the acceleration of perspective. Communicate with your subject. Passport or Official Photographs looks bad because we keep ourselves a kind of vacant feel. It is closer to higher concentration, but it is actually a forced unmindful. If you look at any one’s official photograph, you will not find anything interesting. You will understand the value of eye in portrait photography if you observe these phenomenon. The absence of smile and too much seriousness make them far away from actually you want to see in photo.

Eye in Portrait Photography : The Look and Expression

Self Portrait is difficult, it is very very difficult because our concentration is focused on our camera. The head tilted slightly and the seriousness of the gaze can attract the eyes or push away even after years away by an unknown person. When you look at this kind of photo you are convinced that the laughter is a defense in Photography – it drops the subject-photographer-observer distance.

That is said. But the reverse is also true. A smiling face with the eyes are not really smiling can make a photograph looking towards an official documentary photograph. What our eyes as an observer of a photograph seeks is basically a Candid Photograph. Only from the eyes you can guess whether a couple in a photograph are brother-sister or lovers. There is Love in both relationship but an unknown ‘thing’ makes a difference. It actually can not be expressed in a very scientific way, suppose through equations. The wrong or not-great feel arrives when we are uncomfortable but smiling. If your eyes do not smiles, it actually looks very official or ‘plastic’.

Maybe a picture is false, a setup, a staged one, a kid might not be so melancholy as it seems in a photo. The photograph creates a new person, it does not describe it. So, the chapter of Eye in Portrait Photography is not so easy than probably you thought at the beginning of this article.

The magic is the feeling of having a person in a photo, is the way of representation. It does not explain why, otherwise, you can not help but picture of someone you love. The photograph makes these people beyond the time. This phase shift between current and past produces the melancholy that often assails when you are looking at the old photos.

The easiest expression to mock is surprise. You can easily take a self portrait with that surprise look. Most difficult is probably anger. There are endless unnamed expressions which can only be conveyed through the eyes.
