The elements in the background can ruin a photo in many ways. To give some examples:

  1. In portrait shooting, the branches of a tree in the background might appear from the head of the photographed person, appearing as unsightly horns
  2. When photographing a beautiful flower in our garden, we might be unaware of rusty tools and muddy piled nearby
  3. In any outdoor photos including an excessive portion of a dull gray sky that would ruin the tone of the composition
  4. A practically collection of various objects, of various colors, shapes in the background could steal the viewer’s attention from the main subject

Golden Section is unknown to many new photographers but it can significantly improve a kind of mechanical stereotype way how we compose in photography. The beginner photographers often suffer from a kind of greed, they tend to capture maximum possible amount of things within one frame. Overall, we can focus our attention on the most interesting, most beautiful, excluding those that “ruin” the scene.  When the same scene is reproduced in a picture, this does not happen: our eyes and our brain must be helped to focus on the important elements.

Helping the viewer of the picture is an effective way, to convey your message. You can use the diagonal lines to draw attention. One of the best ways is to reduce the number of elements within a photo. You have to make an effort to trust and try to take a lot of pictures by reducing the elements. Only after many shots taken with this approach, you will realize the improvement.

To avoid problems with a busy background is important, before each shot, make sure that nothing in the background can exert a negative impact on the photo.  It is important to have in mind what you want to communicate with the photos, what items you want to highlight.  If we notice that the background is not helpful for the photo, it is necessary to intervene in some way, because eliminating a bad background in post-production is really difficult. Practically, what is why we blur the background, we add bokeh effects etceteras. Using a Lens Hood, a Tripod with lower f number Prime Lens can make a difference at the beginning. It is actually a cheat sheet to use a lens with short focal length to get gratifying result at the beginning.
