Memcached Configuration & Optimization for Rackspace Cloud Server Guides To Tune CPU and RAM Expensive Queries to be Served from the Cache. Memcached is more harder to properly nicely configure than you can think. Many parameters of the setup need to be known for Memcached. We basically started from a very cost effective solution – How to Install WordPress on Rackspace Cloud Server (Ubuntu 14.04 PVHVM). We explained what is PVHVM Virtualization Mode. The guide was for One Server Configuration, which hardly will cost $30 per month with 30K page views per month. Then we slowly added the tweaks like APC Configuration and Optimization for Rackspace Cloud Server, We Tweaked MySQL my.cnf using Major Hayden™s MySQL Tuner Script and ultimately we added a Rackspace Cloud Database for creating a scalable but less costly infrastructure. So far, our billing has not crossed $60 with 30K page views per month. If you add a managed layer, the cost will be around $180 USD with full support from Rackspace (unit consumption is also cost higher for managed). However, there is no true unmanaged in Rackspace, you will get some support for their all products.

 

Memcached Configuration and Optimization for Rackspace Cloud Server : CPU Matters

 

Unlike APC or Redis, for Memcached, knowing the configuration of the CPU and virtual cores are important. You can read a topic from Intel :

From the webmin control panel we will actually know about the virtual CPU and the cores detected by the Linux Kernel. We advice either to use a separate memcached server or at least build a server with 2 virtual cores for the optimum performance. Of course; even on 1 GB server, you will get some benefit from installing Memcached.

Initial Installation of Memcached on Rackspace Cloud Server (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS)

 

If you have one server setup, you must have these components, we are providing the commands :

sudo apt-get install mysql-server php5-mysql php5 php5-memcache
# next
sudo apt-get install memcached
# next
sudo apt-get install php-pear
# next
sudo apt-get install build-essential
# final
sudo peck install memcache
# add to php.ini
echo "extension=memcache.so" | sudo tee /etc/php5/conf.d/memcache.ini

 

To check whether memcached is running or not; run it :

ps aux | grep memcache

If you run an apt search :

apt-cache search memcache

php5-memcache is memcache extension module for PHP5
php5-memcached is memcache d extension module for PHP5

Restart Apache2 :

It is meaningless to tell you that; if you are using Database as a Service; here is reference :

Edit apache2.ini file and add :

The default port for the memcached server is TCP port 11211. Configure your firewall to open port 11211 for TCP traffic. All memcached configuration settings can be found in /etc/memcached.conf :

We have provided you the resources, it is really not possible to provide some kind of tweak which will work on any system. You must judge and use yourself.
