Power Bank becoming an everyday need as our smartphones, wireless headphones increasingly becoming power hungry. Here is timely article providing technical details of the power bank for buying & maintaining. Kindly avoid buying China manufactured cheap power banks. There are several ISO standards related to power bank. Officially, a Power Bank is a lithium-ion powered portable external battery which is used to charge mobiles and other electronic devices. If you want to save money or need to use commonly available batteries to charge smartphone then we have described that DIY way of charging smartphone.

Power Bank Buying Guide

Sealed batteries with a circuit to regulate voltage made by virtually non-existent companies may invite accidents including explosion during charging. We suggest to use the brands which are major smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, Sony. Both Samsung and Sony costs higher but the price tag gives peace, warrenty and presence of service centers also makes them repairable. Do not seek power bank with LED light, LCD display etc – opt for bare minimum hardware to charge the devices.

A power bank essentially a rechargeable battery which can be charged using smartphone’s charger and have circuit that allows it to charge the mobile devices supplying a regulated voltage. Power banks come in many sizes. The larger the power bank, the more current it can provide provided based on the configuration. Usually there are one standard USB port and one mini USB or micro USB or USB-C port, but more ports may be added to power bank with higher capacity.

Usually the capacity is indicated by mAh or Ah—Milliamp hours or amp hours. It is the amount of power expected over time. It is the current which passes by a specified circuit in one hour. The higher the number, the more will be capacity. The higher the mAh value, more it will take time to get charged from wall socket charger.

The power bank includes a control circuit that both regulates charging of the battery and converts the battery voltage to 5.0 volts 1.5A output for the USB port.

Never buy power bank or adapter with the voltage higher than your mobile battery has. If power bank has 5.5 V battery and smartphone battery is 3.7 V, then consequences you may face sad end. Although, modern smartphones has control of over-voltage, that is not for prolong time usage. If you charge a battery whose voltage is lower than power source, then it first starts to swelling, end is explosion. If you charge a battery whose voltage is higher than power source, then it won’t get charged or will be very slow.

Buy original package of Sony or Samsung 10000 mAh power bank. Samsung’s power bank blowing away Samsung’s smartphone is too unusual. There are various reasons of higher pricing, apart from properly rated battery, good circuit – the outer casing is better to protect the batteries.

Cheap China power bank can not hold charge over 12 hours. Do not push your costly smartphone towards risk with a cheap explosive. Most of the cheap power banks available in the market are made with the Li-ion type 18650, because they are cheaper and their sizes are fixed. While being cheap is the only advantage here, the 18650 Li-ion power banks have a higher discharge rate, loss of durability is faster and they produce more heat when compared to the Li-polymer power banks. Li-ion 18650 power banks have batteries that use liquid electrolyte, while the one in Li-polymer uses solid or gel electrolyte.

China copies of Samsung, Sony power bank sold at cheap rate with high profit. Actual Samsung, Sony power banks perform excellent with common Samsung smartphone models.

Power Bank Operating and Maintenance Guide

A small USB connector cord is supplied with power banks. Use that small USB connector cord with your smartphone’s charger to charge the power bank. There is equation to calculate charge time :

Total charge times for a particular phone = Power Bank Real Capacity * Conversion Rate * Phone Battery Health / Phone Battery Capacity

Real capacity is the value or output of power bank, it is the value written over power banks.
Conversion rate is due to loss in efficiency due to AC to DC conversion loss, heat generation and power loss. If a power bank has conversion rate of 80% then its output is 8000mAh if its rated output is 10000mAh.
Phone battery health is 100% when you buy anew. Day by day phone battery health get reduced.
Phone battery capacity is the value is printed on battery with mAh unit.

Do not use your power bank in high heat and humidity.
Do not use your smartphone while charging.
Do not charge your power bank until it is at least half discharged.
Use your power bank regularly, if posible everyday to have a normal ion flow in battery of power bank.
Handle your power bank with care.

USB charger doctor is a cheap device to check amp, volt of the charger, power bank etc.
