Choosing The Correct LCD Display For Arduino Like Boards

There are many technologies like LCD, VFD, TFT, OLED to show what we want to show. Moreover there are monochrome LCD, variations of monochrome LCD like white text with blue backlight. Choosing the correct lcd display for Arduino like boards is crucial for budget, for compatibility with wider range of board & microcontroller. In this article we will deliver a gross idea of which are towards must buy for wider number of projects and experiments but costs lesser. Actually JXD like media players can be used with TV output but libraries and examples are too much limited in number. It is practical to think about which are commonly used and has bigger user base.

 

Choosing The Correct LCD Display For Arduino Like Boards

 

If we make a list of available options, it will be clear that the thing is not so easy :

  1. LED VFD displays from basic 7 segment TM1637 displays to alphanumeric displays.
  2. Monochrome LCDs – nube of characters, number of supported lines are variable. Latest is white text with blue backlight which has 4 lines – does not cost less.
  3. Monocrome LCDs which supports graphics – does not cost less.
  4. Of course the mainstream LCD TFT displays
  5. OLED displays

 

LED VFD is a constant need and they are really cheaper. That is almost a part of electronics. Unless there is any specific reason, it is practical to avoid the newer “high end” Monochrome LCDs. They lack graphical capabilities. Monochrome LCDs with graphical capability is not cheap either.

But we need some kind of “powerful LCD display” too. For that reason, Nokia 5110 LCD display is a popular, cheap and correct option to choose. They can play video! Problem is that they are smaller in size, backlight usually gives a bad aesthetics.

Whenever the need is color and tracing graphs in real time, those LCD TFT are sold for Arduino, Raspberry Pi are the correct option. We have a guide on LCD TFT buying. One may ask why Nokia 6110 color LCD display not in the list? Because cost of touch screen color LCD TFT screens are actually same and those color LCD TFT offers more hardware capabilities compared 6110 color LCD display.

OLED is purely optional on someone’s need.
