Body language and Artificial Intelligence

Body language has several types. Some are primitive, some lexicalized, learned and some displays psychological image. Artificial Intelligence can detect some. Some important topics of same interest group are Strong Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent agent in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science. Body language is itself a bigger branch and has many prominent books. But our specific field work is limited – our basic work is to make the human life better.

Body language and Artificial Intelligence

The major disadvantage of Internet and those ordinary magazines, newspapers are – they basically have nothing to do with core philosophy of science – clearly they write to fetch money. There are many fully distorted information on this topic-  Body language and Artificial Intelligence are very nicely being licked by an average user.

Just two days back, one of my junior, told me few important sentences. I never talked with the prson in real life. I relied. Why ? In my subconscious mind, my brain has processed that data (that has bigger traditional model of physiology) and added to “white list” many years ago. Our work is ultimately to reverse engineer these processes and write in machine (read computer) understandable languages so that we can execute, emulate and develop further. Now take that, I am an illiterate beggar. Would I take the important sentences as important ? Yes I would. And I would take more quickly. The reason is nothing but other complex thoughts like running this website (this a learned process) or performing an operation (its both science and craft) has added overlays.  (Suggested Reading : Modeling of Neurons) In other words, more codes has been added, a simple php script has been a complex plugin due to add_action equivalent codes.

Keep in mind, there is no fool proof way to measure Intelligence. I gave an example of Pointing gesture. The most widely used deictic gesture is pointing the finger, which is also one of the first gestures ever learned by children. In adults, the pointing gesture is mostly used as ‘abstract’. This is a Physical expression and non-verbal communication. Seems difficult, no. Its easy. Take that, the person was pointing towards a food in a canteen. Some can ask it “Hey! Give that stuff” and the verbal part plus the way of saying (Body language) will point you, its better to avoid the person. So from this small point of Body language, we can actually perceive a personality trait. Everyday you notice but, the importance of education is – Now you became aware. Now add you the head was positioned, how the eyes were positioned, how the other hand was placed.

Aggression, attentiveness, boredom, relaxed state, pleasure, amusement, and intoxication are very primitive body languages and can be detected using Artificial Intelligence or Fuzzy Logic. The reason is, the width of variation is less among humans. Its no-brainer. Just hit someone’s nose suddenly and you will see the first described meaning of Body language. This is very crude way to use Artificial Intelligence and often used by bigger shopping plazas to display Ads ! Its Fuzzy Logic, more than AI.

Practical usages and scopes of Body language and Artificial Intelligence

Think about a bad incidence – 9/11.  Many lost relatives and friends. I also lost. If there were some intelligent computer, that can detect the Body language of the criminals, it might caught them with an predicted accuracy. Yes the first application is security. If a patient  fakes a disease, most commonly we can ‘diagnose’ within few minutes without any test or asking anything. The reason is the Body language mismatches with our stored data inside our brain – in that particular disease the Body language of a patient would not be like that. These are kind of  human behavioral clues. The police and peoples of intelligence are either taught or they themselves learn to recognize the Body language leading to  human behavioral clues. But human brain get fatigued fast. In a mixture of various peoples, recognizing  human behavioral clues via Body language becomes difficult. Because of distractions. A very efficient security personnel will be fooled if a innocent child suddenly starts to cry. We can not override human normal reactions, emotions or moral values. But a computer has no such problem. There are many other biological factors like diurnal variation. Thieves, robbers know these very well. They learn from experiences of peer group.

We often ask a seller – “Is it good ?” Every seller will say that it is good! Your brain actually wants to interpret the way of saying “Yes it is good.” There are gestural perspectives. The perspective of the third person (Observer Viewpoint) and the perspective of the first person (Character Viewpoint) is never the same. Observer Viewpoint is used by the detectives and Character Viewpoint is used by the game developers in first person game (the graphics appears realistic as the player can not pin point the abnormalities). There is terminology in Body Language – Proxemics. It describes distances between two persons. Intimate distance is 18 inches (one and half foot). You are an unknown person, if I approach to that proximity, I will miss many important points about overall Body language. This is obvious, at so close I can not see your whole body.

Personal distance is usually used in taking interviews and security cameras in ATM are usually located within this range as its best to observe the facial gesture. Facial Gestures can be masked. The most important is Social distance and Public distance. To apply Artificial Intelligence to interpret Body language, we need camera. Cameras can zoom between these distance. These provides the best Observer Viewpoint. Gestures cumulatively creates the body languages in part. Lexicalized gestures are like showing signing in the air for asking for a pen to write or worst insulting gestures. Iconic gestures can speak not only on specific things, but also be used metaphorically or discursively, for example, a theory presented with movements of hand. I frequently do it. A teacher who do not make Iconic gestures while in the intense point to teach has no understanding of the topic, less interested to teach or unmindful at that moment.

The problem with Body language and Artificial Intelligence is, our profession adds ‘noises’. A security personnel without dress wrongly can be judged as a criminal from Body language. Number of repeated actions decreases the rate of false positivity. For human, large number of repeated actions dulls the brains perception and interpretable thoughts.
